Family-owned company in beautiful Durango, Colorado, is looking for a digital-savvy design editor

Ballantine Communications, Inc., a family-owned company in one of the most beautiful places in the West, wants a creative, forward-thinking designer who can join our newsroom and oversee print and digital design for our newspapers.

We want someone who leads, collaborates and comes up with excellent ideas to visually present our stories in print and online. We also want someone who knows words and understand news value to bring a package together. When we need a graphic to accompany a story, you know how to create a static version for print and how to also use tools to create a dynamic version for online. We’re not looking to simply replicate what’s in print on our online website. You need to be a dual thinker in our digital newspaper environment.

This position illustrates news, feature, sports and opinion stories. It also designs news and feature pages, including inside news pages. You’ll be working on three small newspapers. Most design work will be done for our flagship newspaper, The Durango Herald. If you excel, we’ll have you help design our alternative weekly.

We want someone who likes to guide others to improve their design and story presentation in print and online. If you like teaching others how to get better at what they do, this job might be a fit.

The Durango Herald, in Durango, Colorado, is the flagship paper for Ballantine Communications. We own three small newspapers, but the design is done on a central desk. We punch above our weight and are repeated award-winners in press contests. Our newsroom is made up of journalists with many years of experience and who are dedicated to the mission of community, local news.

To boot, this job is in located in magnificent Durango, Colorado. When you’re not working, you could be skiing, hiking, cycling, boating, fishing – you name it – in the San Juan Mountains. We play as hard as we work.

We require someone with at least three years of experience as a designer (though if you portfolio is outstanding, we’ll strongly consider someone with less experience). A degree in journalism is preferred. We also require someone who understands the need for digital presentation and familiarity with publishing content online. In other words, print-only designers won’t be strong contenders.

Ballantine Communications offers a full benefits package, including a matching 401K.

Please provide cover letter, resume and a portfolio with at least five design and graphics examples in both print and online and send to Amy Maestas, editor, at amaestas@durangoherald.com.
