Some days I can find a fairly obvious event to play off of and other days I have to stretch just a bit. This was one of the latter. Several women had served in the Senate, but always filling the remainder of their husbands' terms. One woman even earned re-election to her husband's seat. But this woman -- Margaret Chase Smith -- was appointed to and then was re-elected to her husband's Congressional seat. After four terms in the House, she ran for Senate and won a seat -- the first woman in the senate to win a seat all on her own. I was really impressed by the career of this woman -- who, I might add, I had never heard of. I paired a brief bio with the chart you see here that shows every woman in the Senate, ever.
