Long before he led India to independence from Britain, Mohandas Gandhi spent years in South Africa fighting for civil rights for the large Indian population there. This was the 100th anniversary of the march to the Transvaal, the single most important event that helped him build his name. In particular, I enjoyed listing all the times Gandhi had been thrown in jail. The headline refers to Gandhi's philosophy that most think of as "passive resistance." In fact, the word means "insistence on truth." From a pure design standpoint, I was particularly proud of this one -- I loved running the young Gandhi down the side of the page and the old South African flag in the background. Nov. 6, 2013.
