The debate over the Washington Redskins' mascot usually centers upon whether or not Native Americans find the term offensive. In addition to that, one should look at the history of George Preston Marshall, the original owner of the club. The man had an amazing racist history that ended only when the Federal government threatened to not let his team play in the new stadium that had been built for them (which was eventually renamed RFK Stadium). I knew several colleges had changed their own mascots and logos over the years, but I had never seen the old Stanford Indian or the old Syracuse Saltine Warrior until I located them for this page. Yikes! Only one reader called me to complain about this page. But he called me five times over the course of the day. Sigh… Oct. 9, 2013.
