While serving as editor of The Hospitalist, a glossy news tabloid produced in Wiley-Blackwell's Custom Ventures department, I was inspired to take a stab at a ground-up imagining of a Crain's style news tab with a little more visual openness. I picked Garamond, Futura and Big Caslon (for the big-numbers info box on the straight-news page), and mocked up a few basic styles of pages: the one-photo personality feature, the double-truck feature with full-width shallow horizontal photo, a full-photo feature page with type treated within the image, and a more off-the-grid treatment with size and color contrast in the main hed and more white space.
