After spending the bulk of my career cranking out daily broadsheets (up to 13 editions a night), I switched to the world of medical editing, taking the helm of 11x17 tabs like Dental Tribune America and The Hospitalist (and redesigning both with new content and sleeker visuals). I'm now with The Week, a traditional letter-size magazine. But as any editor or designer knows, it's not the format that's critical: Good design and editing practices obtain no matter the format. You can do what you wish in shaping the magazine's voice and narrative style, but if you can handle one format, you should be able to handle them all. It helps to have handled special glossy tabs at the newspaper, as well, and of course newspapers are launched so many luxe glossy mags that one gets experience with all styles under one roof.
