A pair of four-page examples of execution under the most extreme pressures.

The first set of pages, about the evacuation plan for Indian Point in Buchanan, N.Y., saw us request extra space for a story without a ton of visuals to accompany the story. A study in maximizing the use of typography, info aggregation and file art ensued. A prime example of knowing

The second set of pages is from Labor Day 2005. As assistant managing editor at the time, I scheduled myself as lead coordinator and 1A editor for the day to give some other people the holiday. Of course, Katrina was still hot and heavy, and John Roberts was getting the nod to replace Rehnquist. I told the wire crew I'd take the two opens on Katrina and Roberts. I proceeded to scour LatWP, AP and GNS for the best Katrina and Roberts mainbars, pulled together all the Katrina sidebars and a solid Roberts analysis, edited the photo package for all the pages, wrote the heads and designed the pages ... all in an eight-or-nine-hour shift. And I was in my heaven ...
