Help with ArcMAP

We're having some problems getting ArcMAP to work with other programs. Does anybody here use the program? If so could you help us troubleshoot some problems?

Bill, is the problem on the export end or the data end? Depending on the version of Arcview, the data (like Excel files) may require a few extra steps to play nice with the shapefiles. Export-wise, it generates edtiable pdf and illustrator files.

I'm not entirely sure as our illustrator is the one that uses the program, but I think it's the export end. She's having a problem getting a background of a map to export into Illustrator to make a PDF. And I think there's a couple other smaller problems she's working on as well.
