RedEye, Chicago's go-to news source for 20- and 30-somethings, is hiring a designer for its website, weekly iPad and daily print editions. 

 

The ideal candidate has a portfolio that demonstrates great potential to grasp RedEye's dedication to creative, multimedia design that contributes to our unique storytelling. He or she is enthusiastic about joining a dynamic, innovative environment where deadlines are constant and the news cycle can be a few hours, a day, or several weeks. Duties will include designing for all three platforms. 

 

RedEye is a dynamic newsroom quickly evolving into a leader in digital storytelling for the millennial generation. We are small but scrappy, a proven competitor that still remembers our roots as a media start-up. Yet we were created by, and follow the same journalistic standards as, the Chicago Tribune. 

 

All staffers are expected to participate in social media, to generate story ideas and work collaboratively across newsroom departments. You must keep abreast of trends, current events and newsmakers in news, sports and pop culture. This position will require working nights and weekends.

Responsibilities:

As a Designer, you'll be responsible for the following:

  • Designing multimedia packages for RedEyeChicago.com. 
  • Designing packages and covers for RedEye's print and iPad editions using software including the Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, PhotoShop, Illustrator), and MagPlus.
  • Employing creativity to present all information in easy-to-read, visually appealing, informative and energetic design. 
  • Employing independent news judgment and journalistic guidelines to text editing, designing, photo editing and other segments of the design process.
  • Meeting production deadlines and maintaining ideal workflow under minimal to moderate supervision.
  • Adhering to Tribune Company, Chicago Tribune and RedEye code of ethics.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in visual communication, journalism, graphic design, or related field. 
  • Professional experience designing for media. Candidates with exceptional internship experience will be considered.
  • Experience designing for web or tablet. 
  • Digital savvy, social media presence, interest in pop culture and current events (HTML, HTML5, XML knowledge/familiarity a plus). 
  • Professional-level grasp of proper grammar, spelling and punctuation. Ability to write accurately, with clarity and without bias. 
  • Leadership experience is a plus.
