The Dickinson Press, North Dakota's best small daily newspaper, has an immediate opening for an ASSISTANT EDITOR.
The assistant editor is the No. 2 position in our newsroom. He or she is our newspaper’s lead page designer and copy editor, writes breaking news stories for web and print, and has the ability to contribute columns and feature stories to the newspaper and other special publications when called upon.
The position works afternoons and evenings Tuesday through Saturday, reports directly to the newspaper’s managing editor and serves as the newsroom's leader on evenings and weekends. On a daily basis, the assistant editor will work closely with the managing editor and multimedia editor on daily planning while editing copy written by news reporters and our wire services. The position also helps form long- and short-term plans and ideas, and contributes to improving the quality of the newspaper.
This position is perfect for someone with a flair for page design who is looking to gain experience as an editor.
The Press is a six-day morning newspaper (no Monday edition) with a 7,000 print circulation and a Web readership that produces 1.2 million unique page views a month. We won last year's North Dakota Newspaper Association's General Excellence award in our category and have won our state's Sweepstakes award for three consecutive years. We have also won three first-place honors in the national Inland Daily Press Association awards in the past two years.
Dickinson is the nation's third-fastest growing micropolitan area. Livability.com recently named it the No. 1 small town in America. We are located on the edge of the North Dakota Badlands and Theodore Roosevelt National Park, which offers many outdoor opportunities, and are part of the Bakken oil play, so story opportunities abound -- even during an oil downtown. The city has nearly doubled in size in the past five years and boasts a $25 million recreational facility just down the street from our office.
The position offers excellent starting pay with potential for raises and advancement opportunities within Forum Communications Co., as well as housing assistance. This is a 40-hour-a-week position that includes medical, dental and life insurance benefits, as well as 401(k) and health club options. Many of our recently departed editors and reporters have moved on to larger newspapers or to higher positions within The Press or Forum Communications, which is a family owned media company that operates The Press and several other newspapers in the upper Midwest.
Applicants must: – Have a communications degree, or similar, from a four-year college. Recent graduates who fit the job description and have internship, daily newspaper or college newspaper experience. – Provide 3-5 examples of newspaper page design or similar. – Have one year of journalism experience. – Be able to design pages under tight deadlines, and do so using proper AP style. – Be able to work nights, weekends and some holidays. – Have experience with InDesign, Photoshop and other Adobe programs, as well as cloud-based software. – Have strong decision-making, communication and interpersonal skills. – Be a motivated self-starter who can produce award-winning ideas. – Have a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is insurable by the company and a reliable source of transportation.
