Golden ratio and other design principles in page layout.

Do any of you use really well known or old design principles in your layouts for an added effect? Which ones have you used/seen? Do you have any suggestions for others?

As an example, I'm in the process of redesigning my colleges newspaper and I ended up with a golden ratio for my centerpiece space as a default. Thought it was pretty neat. Granted, we are a biweekly tabloid, so it isn't like we will use that every issue. But it's a nice fall-back nonetheless.
