The Durango Herald, a family-owned daily newspaper in spectacular Southwest Colorado, seeks an experienced copy editor/page designer to join its news desk. Duties include: fact checking, editing copy for AP style, tone, accuracy, punctuation, and grammar; editing stories for content, structure and organization; creating imaginative photo captions; writing strong SEO headlines for print and online editions; proofreading; designing clean, organized and visually inviting news and feature pages; posting to social media; some presentation of stories on digital platforms.
About you: You have a strong knowledge of libel and AP style; a deep and broad knowledge of grammar and spelling; excellent and tasteful news judgment; knowledge of current events locally, nationally and internationally; ability to work in a fast-paced environment and with grace under pressure; meet multiple daily deadlines; have an eye for detail; and be tech savvy. You have some experience in Adobe InDesign.
We prefer candidates who have some experience in content management systems. We use Newscycle Solutions. Multimedia skills are a plus. Hours include nights and weekends. We require a four-year college degree, preferably in journalism or equivalent experience and training.
