Thanks for thinking of me Bill, but I just started a new job. Wouldn't look to good to start job hopping. Thanks though!

HI Bill!

It's not so much a new job--as just another job. They cut our pay at the Journal, so I went out and found a part time gig. Just between you and me I enjoy it much more than the daily paper. Looks like your still putting out great looking pages. What did you think of the Times-News redesign? I think it looks pretty nice.

Thanks, Bill!

Oh, West Virginia! Hopefully there will be more adventures to come while I'm still young!

Also, I loved the movie Fargo!

Wow! You're like a Johnny Cash song, you've been everywhere. Things are going in Escondido. I've still got a job, so I guess I've got that going for me. Congrats on the new gig. You guys staying dry?

Hehe, Thanks man. It came as a surprise to me too. One of the other copy desk crew picked out a few of my pages and sent them in. I wish they had comments on why one page won over another. The whole process baffles me. Like I said, I thought a lot of my pages this last year were muddled messes, with no real point of view.

What makes it even more confusing is that all of our designers here took home a prize in the page design category. That seems very odd and a little suspect. But I am glad the Statesmen got locked out.

I meant to thank you too for that advice you gave me a few months ago about tips to make the pages look better. Believe it or not it helped and I am trying harder - but just a little harder.

Take it easy man.

Hey Bill,

Sorry it took me so long to reply to your question. I didn't enter any pages this year. I feel like I'm kind of in a rut here at the Journal. I feel like we have way too much print on the page, and to make matters worse we are relying more and more on "citizen journalists" that take crappy looking "citizen photographs"

It's depressing. How do you deal with design when they want to cram six stories on the front with nothing more than a few mugs and maybe a three column photo for art?

A part of me says that I should be able to make anything look nice, but more and more I find myself not caring and just throwing the shit on the page.

That's probably more than you wanted to know. Did you enter any pages this year?

Thanks for the welcome! I really enjoyed your portfolio. Great use of white space on a couple of them there. I'll have to remember not to cram so much onto my pages.

hey Bill, what's up? I did build the debt illustration and flow chart. I created the Mii on an online generator. (To not offend anyone, it is actually built to look like me!)

Hey Bill,

I saw you took third in headlines from the Idaho Press Club. Did you enter any pages this year? I have a hard time believing my pages were better then yours.

Hey Bill,

Thanks for the compliments. As far as the development process for my pages, it's mostly me just coming up with the ideas on my own after the daily budget meeting. The designer that is laying out the sports front for the day also does the breakdown, so I have a pretty good idea what the centerpiece is going to be early on in the process and I can start to generate some ideas. From there, it's a lot of creating at the keyboard, just playing around with different ideas until I find something I like and run with it. My editors give me a lot of room to develop ideas and are usually pretty receptive to anything I want to do. Again, thanks for the compliments, and if you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Bill,

Thanks for the nice greeting. You sure do have some nice looking pages. Where do you get all that great art? Over here at the Journal I have the hardest time finding good art and graphics. Every thing is last minute with no planning so we're usually suck with old file photos and canned art off our cheap photo services site.

Thanks Bill. I love that snowboarder page in your portfolio -- great illustration and clean typography. I wish I could turn my pages horizontal on occasion, but they aren't quite so progressive in the Business section!

Thanks, Bill. I had the idea for awhile, but the illo took me about five hours while designing five other inside pages. That's kind of insanely fast, but I'm getting used to it. Our staffing isn't quite what it once was. I got the chalkboard from istock (6 bucks) and downloaded the free chalk fonts somewhere on the Web. Sam

Thanks Bill. I got the droplets from StockXchange, erased the background so I could tuck parts of the headline behind, then dragged the opacity down to give the impression you could see through the droplets of water.

p.s. Your pages are great. You have a real knack for typography. Keep up the good work!
