I am a team leader in the USA Today Network Design Studio in charge of 8 designers. We build news and business pages for 15 newspapers spread across Wisconsin, Vermont, Montana, Nevada and Washington.
It's not so much a new job--as just another job. They cut our pay at the Journal, so I went out and found a part time gig. Just between you and me I enjoy it much more than the daily paper. Looks like your still putting out great looking pages. What did you think of the Times-News redesign? I think it looks pretty nice.
Wow! You're like a Johnny Cash song, you've been everywhere. Things are going in Escondido. I've still got a job, so I guess I've got that going for me. Congrats on the new gig. You guys staying dry?
Hehe, Thanks man. It came as a surprise to me too. One of the other copy desk crew picked out a few of my pages and sent them in. I wish they had comments on why one page won over another. The whole process baffles me. Like I said, I thought a lot of my pages this last year were muddled messes, with no real point of view.
What makes it even more confusing is that all of our designers here took home a prize in the page design category. That seems very odd and a little suspect. But I am glad the Statesmen got locked out.
I meant to thank you too for that advice you gave me a few months ago about tips to make the pages look better. Believe it or not it helped and I am trying harder - but just a little harder.
Sorry it took me so long to reply to your question. I didn't enter any pages this year. I feel like I'm kind of in a rut here at the Journal. I feel like we have way too much print on the page, and to make matters worse we are relying more and more on "citizen journalists" that take crappy looking "citizen photographs"
It's depressing. How do you deal with design when they want to cram six stories on the front with nothing more than a few mugs and maybe a three column photo for art?
A part of me says that I should be able to make anything look nice, but more and more I find myself not caring and just throwing the shit on the page.
That's probably more than you wanted to know. Did you enter any pages this year?
Thanks for the welcome! I really enjoyed your portfolio. Great use of white space on a couple of them there. I'll have to remember not to cram so much onto my pages.

Thanks for the compliment, Bill! You do some great work as well.
Thanks for thinking of me Bill, but I just started a new job. Wouldn't look to good to start job hopping. Thanks though!

Thanks, Bill!
Oh, West Virginia! Hopefully there will be more adventures to come while I'm still young!
Also, I loved the movie Fargo!

Take it easy man.
